From Ostrich Races to Rodeos: The Story Behind the Central Kansas Free Fair

on July 31, 2025

Every summer, the heart of Kansas beats a little louder in Abilene. With the scent of funnel cakes in the air and the sounds of laughter echoing across the fairgrounds, the Central Kansas Free Fair continues to bring thousands together in celebration. And in 2025, we’re not just marking another year of fun—we’re honoring a long-standing tradition of community pride, agricultural heritage, and small-town spirit.

From Pasture Beginnings to Permanent Roots

The fair’s story begins in 1870, when Dickinson County hosted its first recorded fair in a simple meadow just south of what would later become Abilene’s city dump. By 1879, the excitement had grown, and organizers built a racetrack and stock sheds to accommodate the growing crowds. Horse races, bicycle sprints, and even foot races thrilled visitors in those early days.

The fair moved around for a few years—including to Hope, Kansas, where Santa Fe Railroad ran 85-cent roundtrip specials from Abilene—before settling into its permanent home in 1906. That’s when 30 acres were purchased in Abilene and transformed into what is now Eisenhower Park and the Fairgrounds. That year’s fair included trotting ostriches, horse races, and a hot air balloon ascension!

Building a Kansas Classic

From 1907 through the 1920s, the fair continued to grow. The Central Kansas Free Fair Association officially formed in 1924 and incorporated in 1928, setting the foundation for the modern fair we know today.

In 1938, the Works Progress Administration helped construct a new Grandstand. Then in 1950, Sterl Hall was completed—now one of the most-used buildings in Dickinson County. Over the decades, fairgrounds facilities expanded with new barns, upgraded electrical systems, restrooms, and kitchen improvements—all thanks to local support and volunteer dedication.

Grandstand Thrills and Rodeo Legacy

Some traditions never go out of style, like cheering in the Grandstand or watching the dirt fly at a demolition derby.

Of course, no visit is complete without the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo, a signature event since 1946. Recognized as one of the Top 5 Outdoor Rodeos in the Nation, this legendary rodeo brings top cowboys and cowgirls from across the country to compete under the Kansas sky.

More Than a Fair—A Way of Life

From bucket-calves to blue-ribbon pies, carnival lights to country tunes, the Central Kansas Free Fair is where generations gather and new memories are made. It’s a celebration of rural life, 4-H achievement, community pride, and small-town hospitality. It’s where local youth shine, volunteers step up, and Kansas traditions take center stage.

Today, the Central Kansas Free Fair is one of the largest in the state, offering educational exhibits, family-friendly entertainment, and something new to discover every year.
